Ancient Kano City Walls and Gates
📍 Kano Old City, Kano
The earthen walls around Kano's Old City were begun in the 11th century and expanded in the 16th, once reaching 9 to 15 metres high with around 15 gates (kofa). Stretches of wall and gates such as Kofar Mata survive, though much has eroded. They are on Nigeria's UNESCO tentative list; a local guide can show you the best-preserved sections. The UK FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel to Kano State, so check current travel advisories before you go.
